Review: Velo City Large Messenger
So Velo City (out of Salt Lake) was kind enough to send me a bag a few weeks ago, and I’ve tested it inside and out. I’m pleased to review it here:
Here’s the “About Velo City” page in Nathan’s own words:
Velo City Bags was started by me, Nathan Larsen, after I couldn’t find my ideal messenger bag and set out to make my own. The bag needed to be...

Final Transient Giveaway entry
Well folks, here’s the last entry. This one’s by Elizabeth, a reader and frequent commenter. She’s showing off her new Rickshaw mini commuter:
My new Rickshaw, just in from a visit to S.F. and a repeat visit to their factory. Mini commuter for those professional days. Small, but very functional bag.
Very nice!

Waterproof Hemlock liner
So one of the criticisms I’ve always held regarding one of my favorite backpacks (the Timbuk2 Hemlock) is its lack of a waterproof liner. So I made my own! Here’s a little video my wife shot of me discussing it.
Annnnnd here’s some pictures:
Sewing this together on my home machine was pretty terrible. I had to physically grab a handful of the material and pull it...

Almost forgot: Timbuk2's got new fabrics! Again!
In order:
Bold Chevron, Shiny Vinyl (Garnet), Basketweave, Black Dahlia, and Ludlow Stripe (Brown Berry).
Not a huge fan of any of the fabrics this round, but what I am a huge fan of is the fact that Timbuk2 let everyone know ahead of time:

Bandolier bags
Introducing the Bandolier bag by SSCY. The perfect bag for a day ride.
This is the bag for those light days for a day ride or a quick jaunt to the park when a hip bag is too small but a messenger bag is too much. Carry a sandwich, a map, an extra shirt, a camera, your ebook, a drink, an extra tube and still have room thanks to the diagonal expandable pleat. The best part of the...

Resistant Messenger Bag (from Japan!)
A long time ago I wrote about a store I visited in Tokyo called Vic2. Although the shop was small, it had an incredible collection of different bag brands on display. They were gracious enough to let me snap all the photos I wanted (which I took full advantage of), and I ended up walking out of there with a bag.
Specifically, a Resistant messenger.
It’s more or less a medium size,...

Bag #1: Netbook Sleeve!
So I decided to make a bag today!
It started out as a netbook sleeve. I measured and cut a rectangle out of paper, and did some fancy folding to get it into an envelope shave. Once I was satisfied with the paper prototype, I used it as a pattern to cut the Cordura, and started folding!
The result was a simple netbook sleeve/bag combination. I like being able to attach straps to pouches...

Great blog man! It is great to see someone else who loves bags like I do. I don’t know if you are interested but I am selling off my collection of new or slightly used bags on eBay. Many of the brands are the ones you showcase here. I hate to do it but I have to. I just thought perhaps your readers would like to get some great bags at great prices.

I made a chain cover!
Easiest ever. I cut an elongated rectangle out of 1000D Cordura, folded over the short sides and sewed them, then turned it inside out and sewed the long sides together to make a tube. Turned it inside out, and boom!
I made this because the one that came with my lock was falling apart. This went WAYYY better than my dice bag, although most of that is because I was just fooling around...
Over 500 posts.
Huh!
Man, that’s pretty awesome. Easily the longest I’ve ever stuck with a blog.
Thanks again for reading, everyone! :D

Velo City has a sale going on starting today! Just use coupon code winter2012 at check out to get 25% off everything they sell! That includes custom work.
I did a pretty in-depth post on Velo last year. Their XXL messenger with x-strap looks awesome! (someone buy me one no seriously). If you don’t want to spend crazy bucks, they sell pedal straps and musette bags, too!
Anyway, 25% off is...

I made a dice bag!
I give you permission to make as much fun of my sewing skills as you want. But I actually kinda like it.
I used an old white t-shirt, no pattern, and cut it extremely quickly. Also took me about 20 minutes. So yeah! I think I’m gonna try another one soon (out of better material).

Urban Ninja.
Not really related to bags, but I got a new jacket.
I feel like a ninja.
jfeld asked: I just...want a really good bike bag. I'm so poor. I want to support my community. I carry my laptop, books, money things pouch, a change of clothes, water bottle, and coffee cup. I live in Boston. I ride my bike everywhere in all weather, but I'm not a bike messenger. I have a bad shoulder so I tend to shy away from the single strap. I was going to order from Bailey Works or Rickshaw....

Sewing class!
To keep the momentum of my earlier post, my wife and I signed up for sewing classes at Spool!
We’re doing the sewing basics class. I’m gonna get a tote out of it (well, my wife will get two - I don’t do totes), but I’m not counting that towards my goal of making a bag because that’d be cheating.
I can’t wait to get behind a sewing machine, especially with a...

Theory and Praxis
Hope you’ll indulge me for this one, dear readers. It’s a long one.
I started this blog because I like bags. I like their style, their functionality, the way bagmakers have turned them into a medium of expression. Many of the bags I’ve posted over the past year (and will continue to post, believe you me) are art, plain and simple. Lovingly hand-crafted by skillful artisans who...
